Our solution:
The easiest solution, of course, is to let the fresh air in. Open windows or doors in the house during some part of the day.
To remove the more difficult odours, here are a few suggestions.
To eliminate unpleasant cooking odours like fish, boil one tablespoon of white vinegar in one cup of water.
For a more fragrant smell, boil cinnamon and cloves in one cup of water.
If you have an open fire, burn cinnamon sticks, orange peel and or cloves to eliminate that after fire smell.
If you have a garden of roses, or herbs or spices at hand, you can
make your own potpourri. Place small baskets or jars around the home,
preferably out of reach of little hands.
The next time you are in a department store, be sure to stop by the
perfume counter and pick up as many samples as you can. When you get
home, open up your vacuum cleaner and detach the dust bag. Squeeze in
the samples and re-attach the bag. When you next vacuum, you will have
sweet smells wafting through the house.
If the inside of your fridge wrinkles your nose, chances are there is
something inside past its use-by date. You can eliminate the “stinky”
smell, by placing a few drops of vanilla essence in a saucer and place
in the fridge. Alternatively, partially fill the saucer with baking
soda. Replace once a month and tip the contents down the sink. The
drain will thank you.
Our solution:
To hygienically clean floors, mix 1 cup white vinegar, 2 litres of warm
water, a few drops of essential oils such as lavender or lemon or
orange, and mop away.
Another simple solution is to mix 1 teaspoon of borax, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, and a ¼ cup of soap with 2 cups of hot water.
Or, for a particularly good cleaner, combine ½ cup of hydrogen
peroxide, ¼ cup of vinegar, and ¼ cup of washing soda with 1 litre of
warm water.
Our solution:
Take an empty spray bottle and mix in it 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of
soda, 1 teaspoon of pure soap flakes (you can get pure soap flakes by
grating a bar of Sunlight soap), a teaspoon of lemon and/or white
vinegar to one cup of warm water. Attach the spray head and shake until
the soap has dissolved. This surface cleaner is safe to use anywhere in
the home.
You will need a spray bottle
Add to this 1/3 cup vinegar
2/3 warm water
Approximately 10 drops of eucalyptus oil
Shake well.
This spray will work well on walls, furniture, tiles, sinks, toilet, batrooms, carpets, sticky labels, kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
