Natural ingredients to feed your face
We should look at using natural ingredients when it comes to maintaining optimum health for our skin and body and that the greatest beauty laboratory in the world is mother-nature herself. So we did a little research of our own and listed below are common ingredients provided by mother-nature and used in a number of natural skin care remedies. We have even discovered why these ingredients are used.
Wheat Germ
Wheat germ is high in protein and vitamins E and B. In terms of skin care this ingredient nourishes and soothes. Because it has a slightly granular texture, it’s good for gently exfoliating sensitive or dry skin.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are beneficial for oily skin because they contain natural exfoliates and acids. They are also a good source of vitamin C and alpha-lipoic-acid. Tomatoes contain Lycopene, which is excellent for the skin. This ingredient is great for oily skin as it removes surface impurities, exfoliates, shrinks pores and regulates skin tone. The mild natural acidity of the tomato restores the PH balance of your skin.
Honey
Honey has been used for centuries as a skin care product as well as a herbal remedy for many conditions. Honey in its purest form is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin. Honey acts as both a natural antimicrobial, inhibiting the bacterial growth that can lead to breakouts, as well as a natural humectant, attracting moisture to the surface of the skin. Honey has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties, gently cleansing your skin and clearing pores while moisturising.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is the perfect edition to your face mask, as it’s a natural and gentle astringent that will help to clear acne without over-drying your skin. It will help balance combination skin and can greatly reduce the size of pores as well as lighten freckles and skin blemishes. Lemon juice is full of vitamin C and alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), which are great for oily skin.
Almond Oil
Almond oil has excellent emollient properties to help the skin balance water loss, absorb moisture, relieve irritation, inflammation, and itching caused by dryness. It’s a great moisturiser, suitable for all skin types because the oil does not penetrate the skin overly quickly, protecting the surface of the skin.
Avocados
Avocados hydrate dry skin as they are filled with natural fatty acids, protein and vitamins A and C.
Egg
Egg yolk is wonderful for dry skin and whisked egg white is great for oily skin. Egg whites are full of protein and act as a tightening agent.
Milk / Butter Milk / Yoghurt
Milk provides nutrition for the skin. Full of proteins and vitamins A, D and E, it has strong soothing properties, both softening and hydrating the skin. Milk also acts as a mild exfoliate. Buttermilk is special milk, richer in fats and emollients than whole cow's milk. For centuries milk has been used as a natural, soothing skin cleanser and softener. Lactic acid is found in milk and yoghurt and is another type of alpha hydroxy acid that not only exfoliates superficial skin cells but is also used to hydrate and soothe flaky, dry skin. It also refines and tightens pores.
Oatmeal (Grounded Oats)
Oatmeal soothes dry, itchy skin and protects the skin as well.
Sea Salt
Sea salt detoxifies and softens skin, removing dry and dead skin cells.
Strawberries
Strawberries are high in (AHA), beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) and vitamin C. These act as a cleansing astringent for oily skin and help to even skin tones and remove dead skin cells so that new, youthful skin is revealed. Strawberries act similarly to honey; they disinfect the skin, smooth it out, and decrease the appearance of dilated pores.
Kiwi Fruit
Kiwi fruit extract combines high essential fatty acids with impressive antioxidant properties, representing a perfect anti-aging ingredient through topical application. Research shows that kiwi fruit is high in vitamins C and E, which aid in collagen stimulation and skin moisturising.
Cucumber
Cucumber is naturally a powerful astringent that helps tighten the skin and smooth out the wrinkles and fine lines as well as reduce under-eye puffiness; it’s a great skin cleanser.
Brown Sugar
Glycolic acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps exfoliate your skin cells and is found in brown sugar. It’s found in many commercial scrubs.
