If you just communicate you can get by. But if you skillfully communicate, you can work miracles - Jim Rohn
Picture this... You walk past a shop around lunch time and glance inside. You're not sure what kind of shop it is but you decide to have a look. As soon as you walk in the door the owner is there saying...
Hi, my name's Mandy! I opened this bakery 5 years ago because I wanted to start my own business and I loved working with dough. I love creating new recipes and the smell as the bread rises. I have three kids and they sometimes come and work with me in the store and that brings me so much joy too. Baking bread is a real passion and you'll notice the difference in the bread because I put so much love into it.
Then walking away.
Yet when you visit many websites - and perhaps take another look at your own - how much of the website is about the owner of the website rather than about you - the visitor? Count the number of times the website has words like; I, we, Company x, my, as opposed to words like; you and your.
But don't people want to know about what I do, you ask? Isn't that why they're visiting my site in the first place? I want them to know and trust me, how can I do that if I just talk about them? All valid questions, I say!
OK, now try this...
You walk past a shop around lunch time and glance inside. There's a large sign saying
It sounds intriguing, so you walk inside and notice a delicious smell. The owner smiles and asks...
Are you feeling hungry?
Now that you think about it you are, so you nod.
Are you tired of having the same old sandwiches for lunch day after day?
Well, yes, that's exactly what you were saying to a friend the other day.
Then you've come to the right place. Hi, my name's Mandy. At Razzle Bakery we cater for the discerning luncher who wants a little more zing in her sanga. (Aussie slang for sandwich... OK words need working on but you get the idea :P) You'll really notice the difference because each one is custom made with a dash of love!
So, this is a long winded way of showing you that people love the personal touch, and definitely want to know about you. But not until they know:
a) they've come to the right place
b) you understand what their problems are and
c) that you are the right person with the right solution for them.
This doesn't just apply to your website, this applies to all your marketing material.
Leap 'n' Bound: Take another look at your marketing material. Are there more I's than You's? How can you reframe your marketing message to show your ideal customers that you understand them?
Running a small business means we can really let our personality shine through - just as long as we don't get carried away with the adage - It's all about me sweetie!
