1. Cleansing Milks

Normal skin

Cleanse the Cleopatra way, add 1 cup of milk to a ½ cup of oats; add 2 tablespoons of honey, a teaspoon of sea salt and 3 drops of lavender essential oil or chamomile essential oil. Stir until well combined and sticky. Apply a thick layer to your face and leave on for 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water.

Oily skin

Buttermilk and fennel cleansing milk. Place in a heatproof bowl a ½ cup of buttermilk with 2 tablespoons of crushed fennel seeds. Place buttermilk and fennel seeds in a double boiler and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep for 2 hours. Strain, cool, pour into a glass bottle and refrigerate. It will keep in a sealed container for around 2 weeks. Apply to the face with cotton balls.

Dry and/or sensitive skin

Chamomile Cleansing milk. Simmer a ¼ cup cream and a ¼ cup of milk with 2 tablespoons of dried chamomile flowers and or elder flowers in the top of a double boiler for about 30 minutes – do not allow milk to boil. Turn off heat and let sit for about 2 hours, strain. Apply to the face with cotton balls and keep any remainder refrigerated in a clean glass jar. It will last for a maximum of 5 days.

2. Facial Masks

Most facial masks are applied to the skin, left on for 15–20 minutes then washed off with warm water, followed by a cold rinse.

For Oily Skin

Fruit Sundae, puree 4 strawberries with ½ a peach; mix puree into one lightly beaten egg white, add a ¼ cup of ground oats and 3 tablespoons of lemon juice. Apply to the face and leave for 20 minutes, then wash thoroughly. This solution is fantastic for oily skin.

Kiwi Clean, peel and puree one kiwi fruit. In a bowl add the puree and mix with 2 tablespoons of yoghurt, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of almond meal (ground almonds) and 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix into a thick and creamy paste. Apply to your face, leave for 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

For Dry Skin

Skin food, in a bowl place 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil, 1 egg yolk, a ½ tablespoon of almond oil and 1 tablespoon of plain yoghurt. Mix until it’s well combined and has formed a smooth paste. Apply to the face, excluding eyes and mouth. Leave on for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water followed by a splash of cold water to tighten the pores.

Banana-rama, in a bowl mash ½ of a very ripe banana. Add 2 tablespoons of powdered milk, 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt. Mix until well blended. Apply to the face and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse first with warm water, followed by cool water.

Normal Skin

Pure perfection, mix 1 tablespoon of honey together with 1 lightly beaten egg white and 1 teaspoon of glycerine. Mix together with wheat germ and a tablespoon of grated orange peel to form a paste. Apply to your face, gently massaging your skin and leave for 20 minutes before thoroughly rinsing off.

Cool as a cucumber, in a blender puree 200 grams of cucumber (including the skin) and 200 grams of avocado. In a bowl add the puree, 1 teaspoon of chopped mint, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of powdered milk and one lightly beaten egg white. Mix until thoroughly blended and leave to chill in the fridge for 10 minutes. Apply to the face and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water, followed by cool water.

3. Cleansing Scrubs

Sugar & spice scrub, in an airtight jar, mix a ½ cup of granulated and/or raw sugar, a ½ cup of brown sugar, a ½ cup of sweet almond oil, 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract (not imitation essence), 1 tablespoon of ground oats and 1 teaspoon of each nutmeg and cinnamon. Gently scrub your face with the mixture for about 2–3 minutes, rinse and pat dry.

Honey oat scrub, mix together a ½ cup of uncooked oatmeal, 1 tablespoon of each honey, cider vinegar and almonds and mix until the ingredients form a paste. After moistening your face with a warm face cloth, apply the mixture. Be careful to avoid the sensitive areas around the eyes. Leave on your face for 10–15 minutes until the mixture dries and then remove with a warm, damp cloth.

4. Moisturiser

Basic Moisturiser

1 whole egg (oily skin) or egg yolk (dry/normal skin)
½ teaspoon white vinegar
1 cup of olive oil
1 tablespoon plain yoghurt
25 drops essential oil (it’s a good idea to use one that is a match with your skin type)

Blend the egg and vinegar, and then slowly add the oil to achieve a thicker consistency. Mix in the rest of the ingredients. Store in a glass jar in the fridge. It should last for up to several weeks.
