If you like to own your books, you can save money on their purchase if you shop at Books Depository, a UK online book retailer, www.bookdepository.co.uk . They offer their customers free delivery on all orders, including Australia. However, it’s a good idea to check the exchange rate before you purchase; it can change quite rapidly.
Another good idea is to comparison shop with www.amazon.com. I have purchased a number of second hand books, and whilst I have paid more for the freight than the book, it has still worked out considerably cheaper than buying from an Australian book store or other online retailers.
Social Club Books Pty Ltd is Australia's longest established display marketer of books, cards and giftware. Through their online store www.scb.com.au you can grab a bargain up to 75% below the recommended retail price.
You can also purchase cheap books from www.ebooks.com, an online retailer of electronic ebooks based in Western Australia. I have purchased a number of books from ebooks, but a word of advice. Check the expiry date of the book you are considering purchasing. Some electronic books are only available for a limited period of time before your access is denied.
If you belong to a mothers’ group or have a close knit group of friends who don’t mind sharing, allocate the purchase of a magazine or book to each member, rotating from time to time so everyone’s expenses are equal. Use a simple roster system to pass the books and magazines around. This way, for the cost of one book or magazine, you get to read many.
Isn’t it annoying when you buy a music CD with 18 or so tracks and really only listen to five or six of them? What a waste! If you paid the usual near $30 for the album, it means it is actually costing you about $5 for each of the tracks you really like. What to do? Download them for just $1.69 each fromApple iTunes at www.itunes.com.
Now, to play them anytime and anywhere, you want an iPod. Cost too much, you think? Not necessarily.Visit Apple’s Australian online store. Here come the directions: first go to www.apple.com.au. Now click on ‘Store’ in the top menu bar. Scroll down to the bottom, and in the left-hand corner of your screen you will find ’Special Deals‘. Click here and the drop down menu will show: ’Refurbished iPod’. You can get a Refurbished iPod nano 1GB, that holds up to 240 songs, for $69, originally $179. That’s a 62% saving. And it’s covered by a one year guarantee. It would be hard to do better than that.
Another source of book and DVD bargains is Borders Weekly Newsletter. Every Friday without fail, Borders email a weekly newsletter with great discounts and bargains to be had. You do need to get the newsletter to be able to print off the discount to take to Borders. On some occasions you can get up to 20% off the price of a best seller— that’s a great saving! Check out www.borders.com.au.
There is a subsidiary of eBay called www.half.com that instead of using an auction based bidding system, sells items at a fixed price limited to the following categories: books, textbooks, music, movies, video games, and video game consoles. Like Amazon, they play a large role in the used textbook and CD markets.
